PASTOR RESIGNS OVER SUPPORT OF KUMUYI ON TINUBU'S GOVERNMENT

Pastor Ogueze Venitius Chinyerugo, an 84-year-old district pastor of Deeper Life Bible Church in Nnewi, Anambra State, has submitted his resignation in response to the perceived support of the church's general superintendent, William Kumuyi, for the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Chinyerugo's decision, outlined in a letter dated August 23, 2023, stemmed from a viral video where Kumuyi endorsed the Tinubu administration, despite its perceived negative impact on Nigerians.

In his resignation letter addressed to the regional overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Chinyerugo expressed deep concern over Kumuyi's recent foray into politics, emphasizing the spiritual implications of his decision to step down as district pastor effective immediately.

Chinyerugo explained that he was dismayed by Kumuyi's call for Nigerians to support the government and its ministers, given their alleged track record and the hardship experienced by many citizens. He recalled his long-standing commitment to the church since becoming born-again in 1984, highlighting how Kumuyi had been instrumental in shaping his Christian life and promoting a focus on the kingdom of God rather than involvement in political matters.

The pastor particularly criticized Kumuyi's visits to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and his recent endorsement of the current administration, which he viewed as contradictory to the church's teachings and principles. Chinyerugo questioned the moral basis for believing that this administration would combat corruption effectively and raised doubts about the past performances and integrity of the ministers.

In conclusion, Chinyerugo expressed his disappointment and regret over Kumuyi's comments, which he believed had exposed the church to justified criticism. He noted that the church had earned respect for staying out of political controversies during previous elections, and he questioned the timing and necessity of these recent political statements.
