GABON MILITARY SEIZES POWER (VIDEO)

Gabonese military seized power amidst election rigging claimed

In the early hours of Wednesday, a group of senior military officers in Gabon announced the seizure of power, shortly after the country's election body declared President Ali Bongo as the winner of a third term.

The officers, representing Gabonese security and defense forces, conveyed on Gabon 24 television that they were canceling the election results, closing borders, and dissolving state institutions.

The officers cited the need to protect institutions and maintain peace as reasons for ending the current regime.

The election center had previously announced Bongo's victory with 64.27% of the vote, but allegations of electoral malpractices and lack of transparency had led to mounting tensions.

This coup follows a pattern seen in other African nations like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, with concerns of regional involvement from ECOWAS.
