DSS INVESTIGATES COURT INCIDENT

DSS Statement on the Incident at Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, on 25th July, 2023

In light of the events that transpired at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, on 25th July, 2023, where Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the suspended CBN Governor, was arraigned, the Department of State Services (DSS) wishes to address the incident as follows:

i. The DSS considers the incident regrettable and wishes to clarify that it does not reflect the professional conduct of our organization.

ii. We categorically disapprove of the incident that occurred and assure the public that we neither condone nor encourage such behavior.

iii. The DSS holds the Judiciary in high esteem as an essential pillar and institution of government. We acknowledge its crucial role in nation-building, national development, and security management. Furthermore, the DSS maintains a strong and collaborative working relationship with sister security and law enforcement agencies, including the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

iv. Acknowledging that undue overzealousness was displayed by personnel from both the DSS and NCoS, the DSS has launched a thorough investigation into the matter. Our objective is to identify the individuals involved and, if necessary, take appropriate disciplinary actions. Moreover, we aim to learn valuable lessons from this incident to prevent its recurrence in the future.

We emphasize that the DSS has fully complied with the law in handling the Emefiele Case, despite attempts by certain elements to misconstrue the situation. The DSS previously alerted the public about nefarious plots aimed at discrediting our leadership. As an organization, our commitment is to maintain professionalism, uphold ethical standards, and adhere to a strict code of discipline. We reject any attempts to misuse our agency for personal gain or misguided heroism. Instead, we remain dedicated to fulfilling our national security mandate and call upon well-meaning Nigerians to support us in achieving our collective security goals for our beloved nation.

Nigeria is our only home, and together, with love and tolerance, we can unite to build a stronger and safer nation for all.
