NO PRESIDENTIAL APPROVAL SALARY INCREASE FOR OFFICE HOLDERS

The recent circulation of a viral story claiming a 114% increase in the salaries of the President, Vice President, elected Federal and State political office holders, and judicial officers has caused great concern. We want to make it clear that President Bola Tinubu has not approved any salary increase, nor has any such proposal been presented to him for consideration.

While we acknowledge that the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has the constitutional authority to propose and determine the salaries and allowances of political office holders and judicial officers, such proposals cannot take effect without the approval of the President.

It is worth noting that RMAFC, through its Public Relations Manager, has addressed this false story and clarified the situation. However, the fact that this baseless story gained traction on social media and in certain sections of the mainstream media highlights the dangers of fake news to our society and national well-being. Clearly, this misinformation was fabricated with the intention of generating animosity towards the new administration, undermining the positive momentum and widespread support that the Tinubu-led government has garnered from Nigerians due to its fast-paced, dynamic, and progressive policies.

We would like to remind journalists, media managers, and the general public to disregard any stories related to government activities and policy issues that do not originate from approved official communication channels. We urge media practitioners to always verify their information to ensure accurate reporting, as responsible journalism is characterized by such diligence.
