BAWA INVESTIGATION: MISAPPROPRIATION & FRAUD

The former suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, is currently under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The investigation involves allegations of misappropriation of proceeds from assets seized by the EFCC, as well as other related issues.

According to a source, one significant incident dates back to 2019 when Bawa, then serving as the zonal head of the Port Harcourt office, was arrested and questioned regarding the sale of approximately 244 seized trucks.

It is alleged that he sold these trucks, valued between N20 million and N30 million each, to his associates for just N100,000 per unit. This act deprived the country of a potential loot recovery amounting to approximately N4.8 billion.

The former EFCC Secretary, Ola Olukoyede, confronted Bawa about the truck sales in 2019, following complaints that he was interfering with assets involved in forfeiture proceedings.

When questioned about the trucks, Bawa claimed he was acting under the instructions of the former EFCC Chairman, Magu. However, he did not include this explanation in his official statement.

Additionally, Bawa has been accused of demanding a $2 million bribe from Governor Matawale, and these allegations played a role in his suspension.

Furthermore, there are claims of Bawa's collaboration with the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Emefiele, in fraudulent dealings with Bureau De Change operators.
