US BASED NIG. DR. FILES MOTION TO DELAY 2023 INAUGURATION

Surprising Turn of Events as US-based Nigerian Doctor Files Motion to Delay 2023 Presidential Inauguration

In a surprising twist, Dr. Adah Obekpa, a Nigerian medical practitioner residing in the United States, has taken a legal step to postpone the upcoming presidential inauguration scheduled for May 29, 2023.

Dr. Obekpa has submitted a motion to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, requesting a delay in the inauguration until his ongoing case before the Court is resolved.

The appeal, identified as Appeal No. SC/934/2019, was filed by Dr. Obekpa's legal representatives. It revolves around his claim of being unlawfully excluded from the 2011 General Elections. Dr. Obekpa contends that he was unjustly prevented from participating as the potential presidential candidate for the African Renaissance Party (ARP), a registered political party in Nigeria.

To strengthen his argument, Dr. Obekpa refers to the Amaechi vs Omehia case as a precedent. He asserts that the circumstances surrounding his alleged unlawful exclusion deserve primary consideration over any other matters before the highest court.

"In the eyes of the law, the resolution of the circumstances surrounding my unlawful exclusion by the Court should take precedence over any other consideration," Dr. Obekpa stated in his legal brief.

If the Supreme Court deems it appropriate, the inauguration scheduled for May 29 could be temporarily postponed, causing significant disruption in the nation's political system.

The defendants named in the original lawsuit are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Assembly, and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the time, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

A statement issued by Dr. Obekpa's legal counsel, Jonathan Akeme, Esq, on Sunday, May 21, 2023, clarifies that the motion was filed with the Supreme Court on Monday, May 15, 2023. Additionally, an application has been made to include President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation as parties to the lawsuit.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the impact on the presidential inauguration timeline remains uncertain. However, Dr. Obekpa's unprecedented legal action introduces a new layer of complexity to Nigeria's political landscape.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to this development. As the situation continues to evolve, both domestic and international observers will closely monitor the proceedings, recognizing the significance of this moment in Nigeria's democratic journey.
