LAGOS POLICE DETAIN OFFICERS

The Lagos State Police Force has taken swift action in response to a viral video showing officers brutalizing an Okada rider. The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the policemen involved have been arrested and detained.

During a Twitter Space webinar organized by Premium Times, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Force, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday evening. The video depicted three policemen assaulting the Okada rider, identified as Al-Hassan Usman, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

In the video, one officer can be seen striking the man with a baton, while another aggressively pushes him away. Despite the victim's attempts to retain possession of his bike, he sustains a severe injury to his forehead, resulting in blood streaming down his face. Meanwhile, the third officer flees the scene on the victim's bike, while the other two quickly depart in a tricycle.

Adejobi stated during the webinar, "They have been detained, I'm saying it now. I got the video of the Abule Egba incident on my WhatsApp from the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and when he sends material to me like that, I know what it means." He also mentioned that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, had taken immediate action by detaining the officers without waiting for further instructions, emphasizing that the CP, being a seasoned officer, knows the appropriate course of action.

Adejobi further added that the photos of the detained policemen would soon be made available to the public by the Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirming their detention. He expressed confidence that Hundeyin would release the photos shortly.
