Official Announcement: Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Orders Termination of Employment for All Civil Servants Hired Since December 2022

Amidst the ongoing economic challenges triggered by the removal of fuel subsidies, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a directive for the immediate dismissal of all individuals employed in the State Public Service from December 2022 onwards.

The governor's decision has resulted in the termination of employment for approximately 7,000 workers within the state, as disclosed by his commissioner for information at the time.

Although Governor Otti did not provide specific reasons for this action, the announcement was made through a memorandum dated August 31, 2023. The memo was addressed to All Commissioners, Heads of Ministries, Development and Agencies, and Parastatals. It was signed by the Head of Service, Lady Joy I. Maduka.

The memorandum states, "Following the ongoing reorganization in the Abia State Public Service and in accordance with the provisions of Abia State Public Service Rules nos 02801 and 02803, I write to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, has directed the termination of employment for all staff hired into the Abia State Public Service from December 2022 onwards.
