KENNEDY ON NATO EXPANSION (VIDEO)

"In 1991-1992, we made repeated assurances to the Russians, both verbally and in written form, that if they withdrew 100,000 troops from Germany and allowed the country to reunite within NATO, we would refrain from any eastward expansion of the alliance.

However, since then, NATO has extended its reach over a thousand miles to the east and incorporated 14 new countries (note - now there are 15). The Russians had cautioned then-Ambassador, now CIA chief Bill Burns, that the entry of NATO into Ukraine would cross a red line and should be avoided.

It is important for us to empathize with the Russians and consider my uncle, President Kennedy's perspective, who often urged us to put ourselves in our opponent's shoes."
