DETAIN SEUN KUTI 21 DAYS

Nigerian Police Seek 21-Day Detention of Seun Kuti, Claiming Comatose Officer.

The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, has requested a remand order from the court to detain Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti for 21 days. This request comes after Kuti was secretly arraigned at the Yaba Magistrate Court without prior notice to his lawyers.

During the proceedings, police prosecutors alleged that the officer assaulted by Kuti was currently in a coma and receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Chief Magistrate Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun, who presided over the court, stated that she was studying the case file and therefore the court was presently on recess.

According to a witness in the court, the police applied to detain Seun Kuti for 21 days, citing the officer's coma as a reason. In response, Kuti's lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, countered the claim by pointing out that the police had publicly stated that the officer had followed Kuti to his house, accepted N12,000 to repair his car, and that Kuti had written a statement. It also emerged that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Panti had met with the Magistrate prior to secretly moving Kuti to court without informing his lawyer.

Earlier reports revealed that Seun Kuti and his lawyers were already in court when the police discreetly arraigned him. The police had transferred Kuti to the Yaba Magistrate Court without notifying his legal representatives. Kuti had previously informed the police that he would not volunteer any statement since the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer had already concluded his investigation and published the findings in the media. Kuti's lawyer, Olumide-Fusika, expressed that Kuti would defend himself against the published investigative findings at the appropriate time and venue.

On Monday night, it was reported that the police at the Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, refused to grant bail to Seun Kuti. This occurred after an unsuccessful attempt by the police to coerce him into writing a statement that would incriminate him in the alleged assault on the officer. Kuti's lawyer had requested bail, but it was denied under the pretext that the investigation was not yet concluded.

Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was arrested and handcuffed on Monday following his visit to the state police command. The police turned his visit, accompanied by his lawyer, into a public spectacle, with numerous officers taunting and mocking him. Despite this treatment, Kuti remained unfazed and not surprised that the police had chosen to publicize their investigative report through the media.

Furthermore, Kuti's wife was denied the privilege of delivering a meal to him while he was in custody, despite there being no alternative arrangement for his sustenance. The police chased her away from the police station, subjecting her to verbal abuse and threats of arrest as an accomplice.
