Uyo ~ Credible intelligence has it that Government of Akwa Ibom State and the People’s Democratic Party have recruited militants and thugs from neighbouring States and the hinterlands to help them prosecute the Saturday’s gubernatorial elections.
A tip-off have been given to the security agencies by a peace-loving akwaibomite who saw some of those thugs being moved at night around 1am to a house owned by PDP member in Ibibio Ibom LGA.
When an alert was given to security agencies, one of the policemen in the SARS unit of the State Police Command confirmed that they have received several of such tip-off and that the Command will swing into action. He said they have out mapped out all flashpoints and that their men will beam their radar on all routes leading to such locations.
Some few days ago, thugs loaded in over 10 buses were intercepted by men of the Nigeria police en route Akwa Ibom State. What was disturbing was that PDP members were all around the scene and Senator Bassey Albert was heard at the background interrogating those thugs. Why were PDP members and Senator Bassey Albert immediately at the scene.
Recall that during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, PDP imported thugs whom Udom Emmanuel called Vote Defenders were used to wreak havoc at various polling locations across the state and elections were disrupted in opposition strongholds.
A joint military taskforce has been deployed by the federal government to ensure the security of voters and hitch-free election. The army commander of 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Uyo has assured Akwa Ibom people that his troop will adhere strictly to the presidential directive to deal ruthlessly with anyone who tries disrupt the poll.
