RUSSIA TO PROVIDE ADVANCED EQUIPMENT TO FIGHT INSECURITY IN NIGERIA

Faruk Yahaya, Nigeria's chief of army staff, has urged Russia to provide "advanced equipment" to help the country strengthen its security.

When the Russian ambassador to Nigeria, Alexey Shebarshin, paid him a visit at the army headquarters on Thursday, Yahaya made this request.

According to Onyema Nwachukwu, the army spokeswoman, the army chief also spoke on the importance of supporting partnership between the two countries.

"The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, has indicated that the Nigerian Army (NA) will continue to explore the cordial bilateral relations between the NA and the Russian government for the acquisition of military equipment to enhance the Nigerian Army's (NA) capabilities."

"The COAS announced this today, Thursday, October 14, 2021, when His Excellency Alexey Shebarshin, the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, paid him a courtesy call at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

"Recalling the long-standing relationship between the NA and Russia, the COAS emphasized the importance of rekindling the partnership for mutual benefit."

"He also requested the Russian government's assistance in providing advanced equipment to boost NA's combat efficiency in the battle against terrorism, insurgency, and other criminal activities that are causing insecurity in some parts of the country."

"The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria praised the NA's efforts to the country's stability."
