WHAT HAPPENED IN ABAGANA ON MARCH 31, 1968

Today marked the history of what happened in Abagana on 31st March 1968 when about 96 vehicles and hundreds of thousands of Nigerian soldiers were annihilated by Biafrans soldiers.

Biafran soldiers ambushed and destroyed about 96 vehicles of Nigerian soldiers in Abagana with their local bomb known as Ogbunigwe or Ojukwu bucket bomb.

These Biafran soldiers defect made General Gowon to remove Col Murtala Mohammed as the General Commanding Officer in Onitsha sector.

It happened when Murtala and his men where heading from Enugu to Onitsha down to Abagana, when Uchendu sited their vehicles and he launched the local bomb at their vehicles which turned the vehicles into tin cans. About 3/4 Murtala's men were dead, some wounded while General Muhammadu was among those who didn't sustained injury.

The Abagana Ambush led to Onitsha second battle after Marc Goosens invaded the city with only 4,500 Biafran soldiers.
